Rod Tuason has become the latest person to learn that it's not very wise to post threats, especially ones involving killing someone, on a Facebook page believed to be private.
Tuason is an East Palo Alto police detective who allegedly posted a note on Facebook threatening to kill anyone he found openly carrying a handgun, even if that person was carrying it legally. The alleged note has led to an outcry from Second Amendment advocacy groups, the creation of an anti-Tuason Facebook group, and an internal police investigation.
Under California law, it's generally legal for residents to carry handguns openly, as long as they're unloaded. But Tuason allegedly posted that if he had seen someone exercising their right to bear arms, he would have "pulled the AR out and prone them all out! And if one of them made a furtive movement ... 2 weeks off!!!"
That appears to be a reference to two weeks of desk duty following an investigation of an officer for discharging a weapon.
In a telephone interview, East Palo Alto Police Capt. Carl Estelle said the alleged Facebook comments are not "reflective of our department or any policies or procedures that we have" and an investigation into the matter is under way. Until then, Estelle said, Tuason remains on active duty.
Estelle downplayed the post, saying it was a private conversation not intended to be public. It was on, he said, "a personal Web page that (Tuason) believed, and I'm not defending the words or the officer, but from what I do understand the officer believed it was his private Web page."
He also suggested that the screen snapshot (at right) that has circulated was altered to make Tuason look bad. "No Facebook or Internet Web site is going to be 100 percent accurate," Estelle said. "I don't know if you believe that or not, but that's my own personal belief."
Jason Davis, an attorney representing the nonprofit Calguns Foundation, wrote a letter Friday to the police department, saying:
This, at its simplest, is political hate speech towards the community to which Detective Tuason is duty-bound to protect. It is an abhorrent and vile insight into the mindset of one East Palo Alto's own detectives regarding on-duty activities. It is chilling to contemplate what could happen if Detective Tuason encountered citizens exercising their fundamental civil rights to openly carry in a lawful manner within the City of East Palo Alto, as one Redwood City man did on January 28th. Like the allegations of corruption that left the East Palo Alto Police Department with a tarnished reputation just a few months ago, this vivid and graphic imagery of police misconduct will be hard to dispel...
To that end, The Calguns Foundation, on behalf of its East Palo Alto members, requests an official apology from the East Palo Alto Police Department for the conduct of its own detective regarding on-duty activities. We demand that your department update their training procedures and policies to include training on the lawfulness of the open carry of firearms in California, training on how to properly and lawfully deal with the burgeoning citizenry that will continue to exercise their civil rights in East Palo Alto, as well as other firearms-related issues. Should immediate voluntary corrective training not be implemented, every available course of action will be used to address this infirmity.
Davis said on Tuesday evening that he has not received a response from the East Palo Alto police department.
Some Second Amendment advocates in the San Francisco Bay Area have been organizing open-carry events, including at local coffee shops, where law-abiding gun owners show up with handguns in belt holsters (and video cameras to record cops engaging in any unlawful harassment or intimidation). Documents obtained from the Sunnyvale, Calif., police department suggest that law enforcement officers monitor open-carry Web sites and discussion groups and have been drawing up standard procedures to deal with people carrying a handgun on their hip.
Even though police may not like it, openly carrying unloaded handguns is legal in California, with a few exceptions such as when the firearm is within 1,000 feet of a school or in a government building. Carrying a concealed weapon, however, does require a permit from the local sheriff, which is not always forthcoming; a federal lawsuit filed last year in Sacramento seeks to change that.

EC's Reding Faults Facebook on Protecting Children
Social networking sites need to tighten up their privacy settings to protect children, European commissioner for the information society Viviane Reding said Tuesday at the launch of the Safer Internet Day initiative.
A year ago 25 of the most popular sites in Europe vowed to improve their privacy policies to better protect minors. At the time Reding warned firms such as Facebook, Yahoo Answers and Windows Live that failure to act would result in new legislation to force the required changes.
A year on, many companies have improved their privacy rules, the Commission said Tuesday. Nineteen out of the 25 firms involved now offer instructions specifically designed for children and adolescents to help them decide what personal data they should post online.
However, only 40 percent of networking sites restrict access to kids' personal data to their own network of friends as a default setting, and Facebook has moved in the opposite direction with new privacy rules implemented last month.
"I expect all companies to do more. Minors' profiles need to be set to private by default," Reding said. However, she didn't announce plans to initiate legislation.
That would be up to her successor, Neelie Kroes, who from Wednesday takes over Reding's position.

Web 2.0’s Social Suicide Machine
I haven’t logged into Facebook in a few months now. However, I’m still being bombarded with emails from the service, and apparently, my Facebook friends are being commanded to write something on my wall in an attempt to get me sucked into the service. Sorry, friends, it’s not going to work. For people burned out on social networking, like me, there’s always the option of suicide: Web 2.0 Suicide Machine to the rescue!
What the Web 2.0 Suicide Machine does is it logs into your social media home, like your Facebook, LinkedIn, or MySpace, and it removes you. It changes the password, unfriends all your contacts, and removes every trace of your content on the service as best it can. Best of all, you can watch your former web life disappear right before your eyes as the service works its magic!

Facebook Moves to Standardize and Own Customer IDs
Adorning the walls of Facebook's Palo Alto, Calif., headquarters are multiple prints of Rene Magritte's iconic painting The Son of Man. The image of a man's face partly obscured by a green apple is considered a critique of people's attempts to conceal their true selves. It's also an apt metaphor for the millions who spend time on the Web trying to keep their own identities hidden, say executives at Facebook, the world's largest social network. "Part of what Facebook is trying to do is help people take the apple away," says Facebook Vice-President of Product Chris Cox.
There's good reason to push people to be up front about who they are on the Web, where million of users enshrouded in anonymity engage in everything from bullying to spamming, identity theft to financial fraud. To help users establish their identities online, Web sites such as Amazon.com (AMZN) and eBay's (EBAY) PayPal require customers to enter personal information on a site-by-site basis. Yet there's a dearth of widely accepted identity standards—the online equivalents of a driver's license or Social Security Number. "There isn't anything built into the architecture of the Web that lets you verify who you are," says Jules Polonetsky, director of the Future of Privacy Forum.
Facebook wants to change this by becoming a kind of digital calling card, what Cox calls an "identity medium" for transactions between the individuals and businesses inhabiting the Web. An early step was the creation of Facebook Connect, a program that lets users log into their profile and interact with Facebook friends on various sites across the Web. In a little more than a year since it was established, almost 60 million, or one-sixth of Facebook's 350 million subscribers, have used Facebook Connect to expand their personal profiles beyond the walls of Facebook.com.
Facebook just curbed privacy options
To help Facebook establish ID standards that are even more universally accepted, the social network in August hired engineer David Recordon, co-founder of OpenID, a nonprofit foundation that maintains a set of open standards for Web identity. "Standards are the plumbing layer of the Internet," says Recordon, 23. "In order for them to be successful they have to be freely shared." OpenID was created in 2005 as a way to let people use a single name and password when they leave comments on multiple blogs, and it's currently offered by major Web sites, including Google (GOOG), AOL, NewsCorp.'s (NWS) MySpace, and even Facebook. Yet it's still not widely used, in part because of Facebook's easier-to-use system. "The open community has not met the challenge to provide a better alternative to Facebook Connect," says Chris Messina, an OpenID board member.
In trying to help users build online identities, Facebook is often faulted for what critics say are attempts to make a buck by undermining privacy. Beginning on Dec. 9, Facebook made a series of privacy-setting changes that include revoking users' ability to hide their name, gender, profile picture, and city of residence from anyone who views their profile. It also gave Facebook Connect partners access to that same information. "The changes will actually reduce the amount of control that users have over some of their personal data," wrote Electronic Frontier Foundation attorney Kevin Bankston in a blog post.

Historical storytelling by Facebook
A young boy in shorts and a white T-shirt, with black hair, dark eyes, and a mischievous grin - that is how Henio looks to his friends on his Facebook page.
"My name is Henio Zytomirski. I am seven-years-old. I live on 3 Szewska Street in Lublin," he writes on his profile. His birthday is March 25, 1933. He is no more than seven or eight years old. As a young Jewish boy, he was killed by the Nazis in a concentration camp.
Henio has been signed up to Facebook since August 18, 2009. "On that day, I wrote my first entry," said Piotr Buzek. The 22-year-old works in the Brama Grodzka Cultural Center in Lublin, and he is responsible for bringing Henio back to life in the virtual world. He imagines how Henio felt during his life and writes as though he were him.
"Here at the center we have collected a lot of information about Henio's life, and then I tried to imagine how this young boy experienced the world around him," said Buzek.
Note the Social Involvement, but lack of authorial response so far:
...By now, Henio has more than 1,700 friends on Facebook, and more are being added every day. Henio doesn't chat with them - he only writes short sentences about his life. His friends comment on what he writes - empathetically and honestly. They tell him what war means. And sometimes they can only explain to him that for many things in life there is simply no explanation.

Facebook Comes to The PlayStation 3 Soon
We caught wind of some sort of Facebook integration coming to Sony’s flagship Playstation 3 console last week, and now the news is official. Facebook support will be introduced to the console in the next firmware update, Version 3.10, and Sony provided some details on what that will entail in a short video preview (embedded below).
Once you link your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook (Facebook) account, you will be able to turn on options to automatically update your Facebook profile in 3 different areas: trophy information, purchasing information, and game event information. You’ll have to manually sync your Trophy Collection to send the information to Facebook, but when you do your PS3 will update your Facebook profile with any of the new trophies you’ve earned since your last sync.
Enabling the second option will update your Facebook profile when you make purchases from the PlayStation Network, while the latter option will vary by game. Sony left it up to game developers to enable support for Facebook updates and determine what game events qualify for a post, whether it be specific in-game accomplishments, stat milestones, or other event. In each case, you’ll always be presented with the option of declining any particular Facebook update if for whatever reason you don’t want to make it public to your contacts.
Sony also made some improvements to the built-in web browser to render Facebook profiles more accurately, and helpfully reminded users they can access their Twitter (Twitter) accounts from the browser as well. And yet, considering that today Microsoft launched a more thorough Facebook integration as well as significant Twitter and last.fm support, it’s hard not to read the PS3 Social Network Integration news as weak by comparison. On the other hand, support for Facebook updates from within games is something the Xbox 360 doesn’t offer (yet — although Microsoft has indicated that will be coming in a future update). Not to mention that Microsoft’s console doesn’t even have a built-in web browser.
At the end of the day, it will still be a nice bonus for PlayStation 3 users on Facebook when it launches, on a date we only know will be “soon.” Check out the video below and let us know your thoughts: will you be excited to generate Facebook updates from your gameplay and PSN purchasing activities on the PS3?

MSN Adds Facebook Integration
Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is offering a sneak peak at a redesigned version of its MSN.com home page that features a cleaner design, a more prominent Bing search box, and direct links to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.
The company plans to formally launch the redesign early next year.
Microsoft said MSN's new look was inspired by customer research that showed Web users want a simplified portal experience.
"Now is the time to clean up the mess on the Web—people need less clutter and less hassle to find what matters most to them," said Microsoft corporate VP Erik Jorgensen, in a statement.
"Microsoft is uniquely invested in search, media experiences and technical innovation. Combining these assets to deliver our new MSN home page is a tremendous win for customers and advertisers," said Jorgensen.
The new portal includes 50% fewer links than the existing MSN home page and simplified navigation tools.
Windows Live, Facebook and Twitter users can establish direct links to their social networking accounts that allow content sharing and feed aggregation between MSN and those sites.
It also pulls content from several Microsoft partners, including Fox Sports, Hulu, and Hearst.
"Customers told us they want the latest information from their favorite sources, their friends and the breadth of the Web—and the new MSN home page delivers via a fresh new look and features," said Jorgensen.
Microsoft is also hoping the new look will draw more users to its Bing search engine.
Despite the new features, and a partnership with Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) that will see Microsoft add Bing to Yahoo's Web pages, Microsoft isn't having much luck catching Google in the search market. The most recent numbers from market watcher comScore show Google with 64.6% of the sector, with Microsoft holding 9.4%.
Microsoft shares were up .87%, to $27.77, in early trading Wednesday.

Facebook Wins $711 Million in Damages Against “Spam King” Wallace
A federal district court in Northern California awarded Facebook $711 million in damages against Sanford Wallace, an online marketer who accessed users’ accounts without their permission, sent phony messages and wrote wall posts. These were used to trick people into visiting outside phishing and commercial sites. In turn, Wallace would receive compensation for driving traffic to these destinations.

Facebook challenges financial regulators: FINRA
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Social Networking sites like Facebook and LinkedIn raise "serious new challenges" for financial regulators, the head of the largest U.S. independent securities regulator said on Tuesday.
Wall Street bankers and analysts increasingly want to use social networking to connect and interact with customers, Richard Ketchum, the chief executive of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) said.
But as these sites are currently designed they may not allow firms to keep the kind of archives of their employees' business communications required by regulators, Ketchum told industry group Securities Industry and Financial Markets Assocation's (SIFMA) annual meeting.
"We continue to witness the advent of technologies that will challenge your ability to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements," Ketchum told the bankers and dealers. "Social networking is one such innovation."
Most firms prohibit their employees from using sites like Facebook for business, partly because of the difficulties they pose for firms' ability to meet supervision and record-keeping requirements, Ketchum said.
"Nevertheless, interest in these sites is inevitable and will not go unabated," he said.
FINRA has set up a task force comprised of industry representatives "to explore how regulation can embrace technology advancements in ways that can improve the flow of information between firms and their customers without compromising investor protection," he said.

Mere hours after today’s announcement that Twitter would now be integrated with Microsoft’s Bing search engine, Google has annouced that it too will include Twittter updates in its own search results. Marissa Mayer, Google VP of Search Products and User Experience, writes in a company blog post

That way, the next time you search for something that can be aided by a real-time observation, say, snow conditions at your favorite ski resort, you’ll find tweets from other users who are there and sharing the latest and greatest information.
It’s worth noting that while Bing’s Twitter search is live today, it sounds like Google will be working Twitter’s data into its search results over the next few months.
The next question is whether or not Google will get access to Facebook’s stream of real-time updates (Microsoft announced deals with both Twitter and Facebook at today’s Web 2.0 Summit). Neither of Microsoft’s deals with Twitter and Facebook are exclusive, which leaves the door open for Google to pair up with Facebook as well. But Google and Facebook have butted heads in the past. Twitter Signs Search Deals with Microsoft and Google
Microsoft also adds Facebook to Bing searches.
Twitter has announced new deals with Microsoft and Google to integrate tweets into standards search results.
The company used the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco to announce that it had signed a deal to allow searching of tweets by both Microsoft’s Bing search engine.
In addition Microsoft has announced a similar deal to allow searching of Facebook results using the Bing engine.
“Today at Web 2.0 we announced that working with those clever birds over at Twitter, we now have access to the entire public Twitter feed and have a beta of Bing Twitter search for you to play with (in the US, for now). The Bing and Twitter teams want to know what you think,” said Paul Yiu on Microsoft’s Bing Social Search Team.
Twitter content will also be appearing on Google’s Search Engine results in a similar deal announced today.
“Our friends down in Mountain View want to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful,” said Twitter on the company’s blog site.
“A fast growing amount of information is coursing through Twitter very quickly, and we want there to be many ways to access that information. As part of that effort, we've partnered with Google to index the entire world of public tweets as fast as possible and present them to their users in an organised and relevant fashion.”
Twitter results will be added to Bing engine today and Google will integrate them in the next few months.
“At Google, our goal is to create the most comprehensive, relevant and fast search in the world,” said Marissa Mayer, vice president of Search Products and User Experience at Google.
“In the past few years, an entirely new type of data has emerged — real-time updates like those on Twitter have appeared not only as a way for people to communicate their thoughts and feelings, but also as an interesting source of data about what is happening right now in regard to a particular topic.”
